Project summary:

The project aims at increasing the technical capacity for measuring the water quality in Gala Lake (Turkey) through purchasing specialized equipment and physically improving the environmental conditions in Vaya Lake (Bulgaria) through investment activities.

The project envisages improvement of the overall capacity for nature protection and sustainable management of natural resources and biodiversity in both lakes through conducting parallel structured studies of the ecological status of the waters, measuring pollutants, making recommendations and developing joint model for ecosystem services. During the project duration it will be implemented specialized training on environmental protection and preservation of biodiversity in Burgas and Enez and awareness-raising campaign. For the purposes of the project it will be delivered a vertical system for monitoring the waters of Gala Lake in Enez and the channel "Vaya Lake - Black Sea" in Burgas will be cleaned.

The implementation of the project will improve the capacity of the project partners in the area of nature protection will be improved, including their potential for collaboration in developing and executing joint initiatives targeting at sustainable using of natural resources and protection of the biodiversity. In addition, the investment activities carried out will lead to direct mprovement of the ecological conditions in Vaya Lake and Gala Lake.

Project status: Finished

The project partners have implemented the activities according to the schedule.

The project aims to physically improve the environmental conditions in Lake Vaya (Bulgaria) by carrying out investment activities (for cleaning of the channel Vaya – Black sea) as well as increasing the technical capacity to track the quality of the waters of Lake Gala (Turkey) by purchasing specialized equipment.

As a result of the project, the overall capacity for environmental protection and biodiversity in the two lakes was improved by conducting parallel structured analyses studies of the ecological conditions of water and pollutants, formulation of recommendations and development of a joint ecosystem services assessment model. In the same time were performed many soft activities:

In October 2017, the District governorship Burgas hosted two such events. At the beginning of the month, a workshop with experts from Bulgaria and Turkey was held in Burgas with the participation of Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water Protection - Burgas, Department of Water Protection at University “Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov".

A few days later was organized a joint training for environmental protection and conservation of habitats and biodiversity - Lake "Vaya" Burgas, Bulgaria and Lake "Gala" Enez, Turkey. From October 17 to 19, 2018, a three-day training was held in Enez, Turkey, during which were presented the results of the water quality survey in both lakes. There was also discussed a methodology for assessing ecosystem services and a concept for a joint ecosystem service model in Vaya and Gala. According to experts, the forecasts for improving the water status of Lake Vaya after cleaning the Vaya channel are optimistic.

Cleaning has already been beneficial in terms of normalizing the hydrological regime of the lake and improving the state of biodiversity.

The benefits from the project are explained by the large environmental, cultural, and recreational potential and importance of the two target zones. Lake Vaya is part of Via Pontica (the second biggest bird migration route in Europe) and lake Gala is a nature reserve (part of the Meriç Delta IBA site). Many of the species inhabiting/migrating in the two zones are extremely rare and/or under threat of extinction.

Project summary:

The project aims at addressing issues which are of universal character for the region and the both countries such as establishing public awareness for sustainable use of natural resources and building an environmentally conscious society.
The main project activities are research of the needs of and awareness about nature protection in rural area, mapping of illegal dump sites, elaboration of study "Best practices for illegal dumping prevention and their effect on business development", development of children manual of ecological issues "Let's think green". Eco workshops in Kirklareli will be organized and a campaign for cleaning and revitalization of dump sites (disinfection, reforestation etc.) will be conducted.
As a result of the implementation of the project Joint management plan of protected areas in the common CB region and joint detailed map of the illegal dumpsites will be elaborated. Thus the capacity for nature protection, sustainable use and management of common natural resources through cooperation activities in the cross-border area will be improved.

Project status: Completed on June 9, 2021

The project activities have been implemented with a change in the planned schedule and the way of activities implementation, caused by the conditions of the measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The industrialization and development of technology in the modern world have contributed to global pollution. Along with population growth and urbanization, increased consumption leads to an increase in waste. If solid waste is not disposed of properly, it pollutes the air, water and soil. Therefore, it is necessary to use methods that are least harmful to the environment. In solid waste management, many cities are experiencing various problems, which largely depend on insufficient information on solid waste management and recycling.

To raise the awareness of the population on both sides of the border, the partners from Bulgaria and Turkey surveyed the attitudes of the population in 50 settlements in Kirklareli district and 50 settlements in Yambol district to identify the needs and awareness of the need for nature protection and the environment in the cross-border region.

The project also included a study of good practices for the prevention of illegal dumping and their effect on business development. Illegal waste disposal sites in the cross-border region have been mapped and a web-based platform has been developed to signal and identify areas in the region where illegal landfills and /or sites with a risk of pollution have been or are being generated. The partners - the municipalities of Yambol and Kirklareli - have prepared a plan for joint management of protected areas in the common cross-border region. A campaign was conducted for the cleaning and revitalization of landfills and afforestation on the territory of the municipalities of Popovo and Bolyarovo.

A team from both sides developed an educational material for children "Thinking together", which focuses on waste collection, recycling and aims to create responsibility for environmental protection and conducted a three-day online workshop on "Waste Separation" with the participation of students from Bulgaria and Turkey.

The platform for signalling areas with unregulated landfills is available to citizens at http://transborder-landfills.eu

The prepared studies, the Plan for joint management of the protected areas in the cross-border region, the children's educational material "Let's think together" and a short film about the project can be found HERE

The project implementation will increase the capacity of both organizations and awareness of young people in the border region about environmental protection and waste collection.

Project status: Finished

The project partners have implemented the activities according to the schedule.

The current project was mainly designed and implemented to support local authorities from the regions of Edirne and Haskovo /Madzharovo/ establish pre-conditions for development of joint waste management products/services in the feature. Through a balanced approach and combination of investment and soft measures the overall capacity for development and implementation of certain services was obtained. This Common BG-TR Project also illustrates a good area for networking activities.  Madzharovo Municipality  registered its own municipal action and started garbage collection by itself in five villages on the teritory of Madzharovo municipality. The action  helped the municipal officials to use targeted funs not only to pay an external company for the action but to invest in some additional environmental projects for the Municipality. EDIKAB invested in purchase of a  skid steer loader, back-hoe loader and tractor for the Plant.
